Prehistoric and Roman, revolutionary, urban, mining, metallurgical, avant-garde, sailor, cosmopolitan, festive and hospitable. This is the council of Gijón. The Romans fell in love with Gijón / Xixón. They had splendid views of the sea and right on the Cantabrian shore, in Campo Valdés they located their hot springs. Some aborigines were found who perfectly controlled the metals and technology of that time. They were in a land of promise, which had a privileged coastline with great sandbanks like that of San Lorenzo, and sweet mountains and valleys. Over time Gijón / Xixón, the capital, became a large city, easily visible from the Cerro de Santa Catalina, where the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida was inspired to place his Elogio del Horizonte, today a tourist symbol of the city.
